What is Alpha?
Alpha is a series of conversations about the questions that concern us all: why do bad things happen to good people? What is the purpose of life? What happens after death? Does God really exist? Alpha takes on the challenge of explaining the basics of the Christian faith. Each meeting takes on a different topic of faith and provides an opportunity for discussion.
Alpha is held all over the world and everyone is welcome. It is held in coffee shops, churches, colleges, homes, bars – wherever possible.
If you are looking for a judgment-free space where you can ask difficult questions and share your own opinions, this is the place for you.
Każde spotkanie Alpha jest trochę inne, chociaż na każdym spotkaniu pojawiają się trzy stałe elementy: posiłek, wykład i dyskusja.
Conversations over meals
Whether we’re meeting with a group of friends at the kitchen table or for coffee and a quick pastry at a café, food has its own way of bringing people together. Alpha is no different. All meetings start with conversations over a good meal because it’s a great way to build relationships and get to know people.
Inspiring lecture
The talks are designed to engage and inspire discussion in small groups. They typically last about 30 minutes and can be presented live or via video. They explore important faith issues and present the foundations of Christianity, addressing the questions: Who is Jesus? What is our faith based on? Why and how should we pray? How does God lead us?
Free discussion
Probably the most important part of Alpha is: the chance to share your thoughts and views on the meeting topic in a small group discussion. It is a chance to hear what others think in a friendly and open environment. You don’t have to say anything, but you can ask anything.

Participant opinions about Alpha
Not only did I have a blast at Alpha, but it also helped me stop feeling like I wasn’t enough or that I was a failure. It helped me build a relationship with God. And because my relationship with God changed, my life changed.
I've never had a space where I could actually ask questions. The leaders really took great care of us. There was so much love radiating from these people.
I was immediately blown away by the love I felt. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to meet me. The meeting place was filled with happy children. I thought I had taken the wrong exit off Route 10 and ended up at Chuck E. Cheese. These people seemed genuinely happy.
I attended the Alpha course, which was organized in the Roman Catholic church, one of the leaders was a Catholic priest. For various reasons, I only attended 5 out of 10 meetings. I liked the lectures, some more, some less. I can recommend the course to anyone with a clear conscience.

Leaders recommend Alpha
Alpha is recommended by christian leaders of all denominations as a valuable and helpful initiative for everyone to explore the meaning of life and the christian faith. Alpha is recommended as a safe program for non-christians and christian from all churches: catholic, protestant, baptist, pentecostal, evangelical, lutheran, etc.
The Alpha course has a reputation as an effective tool for evangelization, especially among young people, such as students. I want to testify that it can be conducted with great benefit in any environment - also in traditional, rural, small parishes. I know parishes in the Archdiocese of Krakow where two or three Alpha editions have already taken place. This is an extremely important experience; the new evangelization of the countryside is a challenge that is still ahead of us...
Alpha is a very interesting initiative, in which lay people help their colleagues find a living faith. I see that it bears good fruit. Alpha meetings respond to the great need to show the living Christ. I would like all young people to be able to get to know Alpha.
Why Alpha? Because I consider it the greatest privilege of my life to lead someone into a personal relationship with our Creator, God the Father through Jesus Christ.
ALPHA is an incredible time of knowing and experiencing God and for many the beginning of their walk with Jesus. Not to mention the sheer joy of serving on Alpha for my team, and the added bonus of it is the friendships.
The ALPHA course is a good time to break away from the rush of everyday life and to reflect and devote attention to your life and find purpose and meaning in it.
The History of Alpha
Alpha was founded in 1977 by Charles Marnham, vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB), a Church of England parish in London. It began as a course for church members on the basic beliefs commonly held by many believers in Christ, but later became used as an introduction for those interested in the faith.
John Irvine, vicar of HTB in Marnham, took over the course in 1981 and developed the 10-week format that continues today.
In 1985, Nicky Lee took on the course
In 1990, Nicky Gumbel renamed Alpha as a course for non-church members, exploring the Christian faith through a series of talks and conversations with others.
Alpha grew rapidly in the UK in the 1990s, from just four courses in 1991 to 2,500 in 1995. It peaked in 1998, when 10,500 courses were run. By 2001, this had fallen to 7,300.In 2018, the Alpha website described the course as being run in over 100 countries and in over 100 languages, and that over 24 million people had taken the course. As of 2022, the Alpha website states that the course “has been translated into 112 different languages.”
